Shelby County Trustee Regina Newman recently purchased a $260,000 phone system at taxpayers’ expense without seeking a competitive bid. This action has forced the county attorney to investigate whether or not Newman violated county procedure.

Newman claims that she is not required by law to seek other bids, although it goes directly against Shelby County’s bidding process that all other departments subscribe to. Despite the loophole she’s using, her refusal to seek other bids calls into question her commitment to spending taxpayers’ money responsibly.

“This is obviously concerning to me and the public,” said David Lenoir, candidate for Shelby County Trustee. “Any public official owes it to the people he or she represents to use their tax dollars wisely.”
According to a Thursday report on WMC-TV, Shelby County Finance Administrator Mike Swift even offered to put Newman’s “tax-chasing phone system” on the county’s existing network at no extra cost, but Newman refused.

“Any time you’re dealing with such a large amount of money, especially money belonging to taxpayers, a public servant should insist on seeking what is best for those taxpayers,” Lenoir continued. “This is simply economic common sense. Perhaps Regina Newman believes that economic common sense doesn’t apply when spending other people’s money.”

“If elected, I will bring greater accountability to the Trustee’s office in order to prevent such questionable dealings from ever occurring.”

Early Voting begins downtown TODAY and resumes next week at all satellite locations. Election Day is on August 5th.

I have the pleasure to serve on the board of a local community organization with a young man named Marron Thomas. Marron runs a fantastic ministry in the Frayser/North Memphis area called Youth Visions. Youth Visions mentors and ministers to young people in the community through after-school, athletic and academic programs and they do a fantastic job. It has been my pleasure to be involved with the ministry, and I encourage you to find out more. My family and I had the opportunity to attend the Parent and Family Cookout and to hear about all the activities of the summer.

Congratulations to Marron, the staff and young people at Youth Visions. Keep up the great work!

The last few weeks have been extremely busy for our campaign. I have met with voters from Collierville to Millington, from Mid-town to Germantown and North Memphis to South Memphis. Shelby County is very diverse. We share a community that has many strengths and endless possibilities. We may have different zip codes, skin tones or tax brackets, but when those differences are set aside we all want the same things: a safe, thriving community where we can live, work and raise our families.

Thank you to all of you who have invited me to the many events I have had the pleasure of attending. Just of few of the highlights include the Wooddale High School Aviation event, Whitehaven Summerfest, the SCRW Red White and Blue Picnic, lunch with the National Hispanic Professionals Organization, a special appreciation dinner for Pastor Melvin Wade and many others.

I feel very strongly that the Shelby County Trustee should be keenly aware of the our community’s economic development, and to that end I have also been meeting with county and community leaders to dig into the issues unique to the neighborhoods that make up the county. I have met with Jim Huntzicker, Shelby County CAO and CFO and Mike Swift, Shelby County Deputy Director of the division of Administration and Finance as well as Michael De ‘Shazer, Executive Director of Olivet Incubation and Training Center, Marron Thomas Executive director of Youth Visions, Bernal Smith President and Publisher of the Tri-State Defender and others. Are we in challenging economic times? Yes, but after meeting with these leaders it is apparent we are not without those who care and are willing to work hard to see that we get the ship turned around. Together, with a roll-up-your sleeves approach, we can and will make a difference.

Finally, I must mention our strong community of faith. I, along with my wife and two boys, have been overwhelmed at the warm welcome we have received in area churches. I would be remiss if I did not thank Pastor Uliasea Little and the congregation at Christ Church in Whitehaven, New Sardis Baptist Church and Dr. LaSimba Gray, Pastor Willie Ward of Mt. Pisgah CME Church, Pastor Dawson and the worshipers at Cane Creek Church and of course those at the JIFF Pastors Luncheon.

Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety. Proverbs 11:14

Sunday afternoon we were invited to the annual picnic at New Sardis Baptist Church. The food was amazing (and plentiful) and we all had a great time enjoying the fellowship, and music from the Re-Entry Band. Our youngest son, Christian, had to be dragged away from a serious volleyball game! Thank you to Pastor LaSimba Gray and the families of New Sardis Baptist for the invitation and for making us feel so welcome.

“I sincerely appreciate the support and votes I received throughout Shelby County. I am eager to continue to meet even more voters, and tell them why I believe I’m the most qualified candidate for Trustee. Together, we can bring greater efficiency to the Trustee’s office. I would like to commend John Willingham for running an honorable campaign, and I look forward to earning his support as well. The efforts of my campaign committee and the support of my family paid off today.”
